What to bring to sober living: a checklist

Bring your ID, about two weeks of clothes, work clothes, toiletries, prescriptions in their original bottles with your prescriber’s contact information, a phone and charger, and your move-in money. Leave alcohol, drugs, paraphernalia, weapons and pornography at home.

Documents

  • Photo ID
  • Social Security card and insurance card, if you have them
  • Court, probation or parole paperwork
  • A list of your medications and your prescriber’s name and phone number

Clothes

  • About two weeks of everyday clothes
  • Work clothes and boots
  • Something you’re comfortable wearing to church. At Overcomers, every resident attends Sunday service.
  • Weather gear for an Oklahoma winter or summer

Personal items

  • Toiletries, including alcohol-free mouthwash
  • A towel and, if the home doesn’t provide them, bedding
  • Phone and charger
  • A Bible and a notebook, if you have them

Medications

Bring every prescription in its original bottle. Most homes verify prescriptions and store some medications securely. At Overcomers, we go over every medication at your intake interview and confirm it with your prescriber, and medication-assisted treatment is allowed when it’s prescribed and taken as directed. More on MAT in sober living.

Money

Plan for your move-in fee and weekly rent. At Overcomers that’s a one-time $75 move-in fee and $135 a week, paid online. See every fee.

Leave these at home

  • Alcohol, drugs and paraphernalia
  • Weapons
  • Pornography
  • Anything with alcohol in it, like some mouthwashes and cold medicines (ask first)

What move-in day looks like at Overcomers

Your house manager does your intake interview and a drug screen to set your baseline, verifies your medications, collects the move-in fee and assigns your bed, chores and mentor. Within 24 hours, he walks you through the house: exits, the shelter area, first aid and naloxone, the kitchen and laundry, quiet hours, the rules, your rights and how passes work.
