What makes Christian sober living different
Christian sober living adds discipleship to the structure of a sober home: church, Bible study and spiritual mentorship become part of the weekly rhythm, and the goal goes beyond staying sober to becoming a new man in Christ. A good Christian home still keeps the basics of any quality recovery residence: written rules, drug testing and safety.
What’s the same
Like any good sober home, a Christian sober living home is free of alcohol and drugs, tests residents, keeps written rules and fees, expects work and recovery meetings, and gives men a safe place to rebuild.
What’s different
- Identity. At Overcomers, a man takes on a name: Overcomer. “I am not my worst day. My past explains me; it does not define me.”
- A spiritual rhythm. Sunday service and Tuesday Disciple Me at The Good Fight Church, plus a house Bible study, every week.
- A bigger goal. Not just a man who stopped using, but a restored man: reconciled to God, rebuilt in character, reconnected to family.
- A church family that stays. When you move out, the church and the brothers you met there don’t go away.
- Recovery that’s given back. “Recovery received becomes recovery given.” Graduates reach the next man still in the dark.
Faith and the 12 steps together
Many Christian homes, Overcomers included, use both. Our men attend recovery meetings by time sober, including AA, alongside church and discipleship. The steps and the gospel point the same direction: honesty, surrender and helping the next person.
What to look for in a Christian sober living home
- A real connection to a local church, not just a verse on the wall
- Written house rules, fees and resident rights you can read before you pay
- Drug testing and a clear relapse policy that still cares for the man who slips
- Respect for medical care, including prescribed medication for opioid use disorder
- Honesty about what it is: housing and discipleship, not clinical treatment
- No payments for referrals
Do you have to be a Christian?
At Overcomers, men of any background can apply. It is a Christ-centered program, so every resident attends church and Disciple Me each week. Many men find faith here. Some were raised in church and are coming home.
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”2 Corinthians 5:17, KJV
